Super fun article for Fast Company called "ABBA Songs that Double as Money Making Inspiration"

Here's the article online - http://www.fastcompany.com/3007819/abba-songs-double-money-making-inspiration

Side note, I'm glad it works horizontally !

Here are the thumbnail sketches that I submitted for it. Really glad the art directors picked #5.

Thanks Alice and Ted for this one!

editorial, illustration, lady justice, arts on trial, jello biafra, scales, mental floss, magazine

Recent one for Mental Floss magazine for an article titled "Arts on Trial".

Basically the article went through 5 of the biggest trials throughout history, including the recent one involving Jello Biafra and the Dead Kennedy's album art work.

We had initially thought that we should riff on the top of 'censorship' so i came up with these three thumbnail sketches.

1. Lady Justice as a nude with her privates blurred or censored in some fashion.

<img src="http://payload154.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5393740/ladyjustice_sketch.jpg" width="670" height="670" width_o="1936" height_o="1938" src_o="http://payload154.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5393740/ladyjustice_sketch_o.jpg" data-mid="29028405" border="0" align="left"/>

2. The artist's studio. The viewer is looking through a bookshelf into the artist's studio. He's painting a nude and the nude is blocked by a perfectly angled black book on censorship.

<img src="http://payload154.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5393740/censoredartist.jpg" width="670" height="626" width_o="2024" height_o="1893" src_o="http://payload154.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5393740/censoredartist_o.jpg" data-mid="29028412" border="0" align="left"/>

Side note, i actually finished this one up because I like it so much here

3. The scales idea. Lawyers on one side and the cases including a crazy looking Jello Biafra on the other.

<img src="http://payload154.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5393740/scales.jpg" width="670" height="506" width_o="1868" height_o="1412" src_o="http://payload154.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5393740/scales_o.jpg" data-mid="29028417" border="0" align="left"/>

We realized though that the article wasn't only about censorship and ended up going with a modified version of the lady justice but one that incorporated all the articles (the money robe, burning books, etc).

Thanks Winslow for rocking with me on this one and for the art direction. Really happy with how it turned out.

Really excited about this one. I was invited by the Tulare Country symphony to do an illustration for their upcoming season.

The concept was basically 'vienna to america' so the art director and I had a pretty wide open brief. I knew that i wanted to do the thick acrylic style for this to give it a nice tactile / old school vibe and these are the two concepts that made it: a violin with stars in lieu of f-holes and a stark black piano with a little bit of americana under the hood.

I snapped a couple of work in progress shots for the violin so I'll put those here too.

Thanks Larry for letting me take a crack at this one !<img src="http://payload152.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5349485/symphony_inprogress1.JPG" width="670" height="500" width_o="2048" height_o="1529" src_o="http://payload152.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5349485/symphony_inprogress1_o.JPG" data-mid="28783210" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload152.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5349485/symphony_inprogress2.JPG" width="670" height="500" width_o="2048" height_o="1529" src_o="http://payload152.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5349485/symphony_inprogress2_o.JPG" data-mid="28783227" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload152.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5349485/SymphonyCoverOptions2.jpg" width="670" height="1300" width_o="850" height_o="1650" src_o="http://payload152.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5349485/SymphonyCoverOptions2_o.jpg" data-mid="28783197" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload152.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5349485/SymphonyCoverOption.jpg" width="670" height="1300" width_o="850" height_o="1650" src_o="http://payload152.cargocollective.com/1/6/220524/5349485/SymphonyCoverOption_o.jpg" data-mid="28783188" border="0" align="left"/>

I am stoked for the addition of the citi bikes to the city this summer. After visiting amsterdam last year and seeing how a city dominated by bikes could actually thrive and seeing how londoners love their "boris bikes", it makes me proud that we're going to have our own, "mikes bikes"

I had this thought that a portrait of bloomberg in a bike helmet sums things up nicely. I'm no portrait painter so you get what you get really. Maybe it's a little loose and Alice Neal-ish which i'm perfectly okay with.

Also, the fact that there is a giant portrait of hizzoner in a bike helmet in our apartment further makes my fiance think that i'm a crazy person..
